"Designing the Good Life: Norman M. Giller and the Development of Miami Modernism" presented by Sarah Giller Nelson, Art Historian and Assistant Curator at the Spertus Museum.
Ms. Nelson will speak about the book she helped create about Miami Modernism, and will also share with us the experience of chronicling her grandfather's life story. Miami Modernism (MiMo) is an exuberant, subtropical strain of mid-century architecture that came to define Miami in the post-war years
December:
"The Development of Marriage in Judaism" presented by Rachel Havrelock, Hebrew Bible scholar at the University of Illinois.
The sanctity and naturalness of marriage have become buzzwords, but what does the Bible actually say about marriage? The short answer is, not much, for indeed there is no representation of a marriage ceremony or process in the Bible. After looking at the scant material in the Bible, we will consider how the ceremony and institution of marriage came about in Judaism through the Talmud.
January:
"The Jewish Singers of the Great American Songbook" presented by Mitchell Brown
Last year, Mitchell helped us understand the influence of Jewish composers on American music. By popular demand, he returns this year to explore the influence of Jewish singers on American music. Some of the selections include Sophie Tucker, Fannie Brice, Al Jolson and Barbara Streisand. Enjoy Mitchell's extensive knowledge and personal music collection.
