B'nei Mitzvah

The B’nei Mitzvah program includes:

Mini-retreats

Beginning in the 6th grade, there will be a series of “mini-retreats” held on Saturday and/or Sunday afternoon for the B’nei Mitzvah student and his/her family, that will be led by the Rabbi, Cantor and Director of Religious Education.  In these sessions, we will focus on what it means to become Bar or Bat Mitzvah in a Reform synagogue in the 21st century; and the Bar/Bat Mitzvah in the context of the family;  the structure and meaning of the siddur, the Jewish prayerbook.

Jewish Values

In this class students will be presented with realistic ethical problems that are submitted to the test of Jewish law in order to find “the right solution”. Students are confronted with a series of moral dilemmas, participate in discussions on values and ethics, and take a look into the Talmud, the codes and the wisdom of the Jewish legal process.

Parashat ha-shavua

Students will study the parashat ha-shavua (Torah portion of the week).  Each week the class will concentrate on two verses of the Torah portion in Hebrew; read verses without vowels in Torah script and study some aspects of their meaning, and finally, will learn from them a relevant and doable mitzvah.

In addition, during the B'nai Mitzvah year, each student works individually with a tutor to study and prepare his/her Torah and Haftarah portions. The students continue to improve their Hebrew skills by practicing blessings and exploring their origins and meanings.
